=Description= | |||
The 1990 Topps set consists of 792 standard-sized baseball cards. The cards are printed on gray stock. The card fronts have a non-glossy finish and feature color photographs of players. The card borders are colored with a fading rotating pattern in various colors (orange, blue, red, green, and purple) which don't relate to the player's team colors. The photo itself has a colored frame which, more-or-less, relate to the team colors. The card reverse is non-finished, with a mustard yellow color. As Topps has done for years, the backs contain player personal stats, career stats and a few lines of player trivia.
Tiffany Sets are identical to the regular set, except for white cardboard stock and a glossy finish. Tiffany sets were distributed exclusive to The Hobby and limited to 15,000 factory sets.

====Missing Black Ink====
Some cards with blank fronts exist as well as cards with missing black ink on the front. [According to researchers, http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=709331] Topps printed this set in six separate sheets and a small percentage of cards from sheet "F" were printed and packaged with missing black ink on the front. The most popular card missing black ink on the front is the Frank Thomas "NNOF" ("No Name on Front") rookie card. Thomas happens to be the most sought after card in set; however according to researchers, printing the card without the name wasn't a deliberate act, or gimmick, by Topps.
The number of known missing black ink cards is listed below.

The 1990 O-Pee-Chee baseball set was a 792-card set produced and distributed for the Canadian market. For the first time since 1976, O-Pee-Chee issued the exact same set as Topps. The only distinctions are the bilingual text (English and French) and the O-Pee-Chee copyright on the backs. The fronts still have the Topps logo.

The penultimate year for the product, Topps Tiffany was a "high-end" version of Topps' base set. Available exclusively in factory set form and distributed directly to Hobby dealers, Topps Tiffany cards are printed on white cardstock, have a glossy coating and were printed in the same Irish facility where Topps Traded sets were produced. Only 15,000 1990 Topps Tiffany factory sets were printed.
The Frank Thomas "NNOF" card does not exist in the Tiffany set.

===George Bush USA Card===
A card done in the 1990 Topps style of then-President George H. W. Bush also exists. Topps printed 100 cards of the President as a gift to the Commander in Chief. During his days at Yale, Bush played first base on the varsity baseball team and was team captain his Senior year. Over time, some these cards have made it into the secondary market and a few were pulled from packs. A photo in [[Topps Magazine]] from 1990 depicts President Bush being presented with a binder of these cards.
In the Summer of 1990, White House Chief of Staff John Sununu, himself an avid card collector, appeared on ''The Tonight Show'' and traded a 1990 Topps George Bush card to Johnny Carson for a 1957 Topps Ernie Banks. In 2013, Governor Sununu submitted a Bush card to Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) for grading; who then discovered a heretofore unknown variation.
Whereas, all other Bush cards that had been previously graded by PSA had a rough surface -- not unlike a regular 1990 Topps card -- the card Governor Sununu submitted to PSA had a glossy coating on the front. All glossy cards were from the batch Topps gave directly to President Bush, who then gave a few to Governor Sununu. Former Topps CEO Arthur Shorin (who also possesses a glossy) confirmed in a press release that only 100 glossy cards were produced. It remains unclear why or how the non-glossy cards were produced or distributed; however, some collectors in 1990 reported pulling them from packs.

Description
Key Rookie Cards include: Frank Thomas, Sammy Sosa, Bernie Williams, Larry Walker and Juan Gonzalez.

Variations
Missing Black Ink

Parallels
O-Pee-Chee
The 1990 O-Pee-Chee baseball set was a 792-card set produced and distributed for the Canadian market. For the first time since 1976, O-Pee-Chee issued the exact same set as Topps. The only distinctions are the bilingual text (English and French) and the O-Pee-Chee copyright on the backs. The fronts still have the Topps logo.
Tiffany
The penultimate year for the product, Topps Tiffany was a "high-end" version of Topps' base set. Available exclusively in factory set form and distributed directly to Hobby dealers, Topps Tiffany cards are printed on white cardstock, have a glossy coating and were printed in the same Irish facility where Topps Traded sets were produced. Only 15,000 1990 Topps Tiffany factory sets were printed.
The Frank Thomas "NNOF" card does not exist in the Tiffany set.
Inserts
George Bush USA Card
A card done in the 1990 Topps style of then-President George H. W. Bush also exists. Topps printed 100 cards of the President as a gift to the Commander in Chief. During his days at Yale, Bush played first base on the varsity baseball team and was team captain his Senior year. Over time, some these cards have made it into the secondary market and a few were pulled from packs. A photo in Topps Magazine from 1990 depicts President Bush being presented with a binder of these cards.
In the Summer of 1990, White House Chief of Staff John Sununu, himself an avid card collector, appeared on The Tonight Show and traded a 1990 Topps George Bush card to Johnny Carson for a 1957 Topps Ernie Banks.
Box Bottoms
These "cards" were featured four to a box on the bottom of each waxbox. There were four different panels for a total of 16 cards. The set is lettered A-P rather than sequentially-numbered. When individually cut out, each card measures 2.5" X 3.5".

Glossy Send-Ins
This 60-card set was available by mailing in the special offer cards found in 1990 Topps wax packs. With enough special offer cards, and a nominal shipping & handling fee, collectors could choose one of six different "series" of Glossies, with two cards per series (cards ending in 9 and 0) featuring a "young star." The design of the set is identical to previous year's Glossies, except for a thin, red, border.
After an eight-year run, this would be the final year for the Glossy Send-Ins.
