=Distribution=
2007 Topps is a 661-card set released in two series.  The first 330 cards were released in February, 2007 while Series Two (consisting of cards #331-#661) was issued in June.  This was the first black-bordered Topps set since 1971; but unlike [[1971 Topps]], the 2007 design was not well received by collectors.  The product was also hampered by a series of repetitive "Mirror" inserts.


=Reviews=
Barry Bonds, whose exclusive trading card deal with Topps expired at the end of 2006, re-upped with Topps in time for the second series. 


=Insertion Ratios=
Jason Varitek has his first Topps card as an active player, and his first Topps card since [[1993 Stadium Club Murphy]] -- when he was depicted as a member of Team USA.

1 John Lackey
2007 marked a turning point in Topps' relationship with The Hobby and card collectors, as it was the first time the company resorted to base-card gimmickry as a means of generating interest in its product. Derek Jeter's base card (#40) was issued, without announcement, with images of Mickey Mantle and then-President George W. Bush Photoshopped into the background.


2 Nick Swisher
The card had the intended effect of creating "buzz" around Series One -- as if the product needed it -- as curious collectors were drawn into the frenzy. On the surface, that might seem like a good thing. Unfortunately, many of these uneducated marks mistook the card for another Billy Ripken-esque error, grossly overpaying for what was, at its core, an ordinary Derek Jeter base card with a gimmick attached.

Since 2007, virtually every Topps flagship baseball release -- and several of its other brands -- has featured some sort of gimmick, with the concepts becoming progressively more contrived and ridiculous with each passing year.

For the factory sets, Topps removed both Mantle and Bush from Jeter's card. Ironically, because relatively few factory sets were ever opened, the factory-set version of Jeter #40 may actually be scarcer than the gimmick version.

Ryan Z. Braun appeared in 35 games across two seasons for the Royals in 2006-07.  Unfortunately, Topps printed the facsimile signature of the more famous Ryan J. Braun (2011 NL MVP) on the pitcher Braun's 2007 Topps rookie card (#262).  Topps corrected this error in time for the factory set.

In what would become an unfortunate taste of things to come, Topps randomly inserted into Series One packs sold only at Wal-Mart, the following four "variation" cards.  Like gimmicks in future years, there is nothing on the card (other than the photo used) that differentiates the regular base card from the gimcrack.

Much like Barry Bonds, Mickey Mantle, and Alex Rodriguez before them, Josh Gibson got the Mirror treatment in Series One.  No one knew EXACTLY how many home runs Gibson hit, but that didn't stop Topps from releasing this 110-card insert anyway.

Unlike the Bonds, Mantle, and A-Rod sets, there are no details on the specific home run on any of the Gibson cards.  Each card is (literally) the same, with the exception of a foil-stamped number on the front.  If you've got one, you've got them all.

Description

2007 Topps is a 661-card set released in two series. The first 330 cards were released in February, 2007 while Series Two (consisting of cards #331-#661) was issued in June. This was the first black-bordered Topps set since 1971; but unlike 1971 Topps, the 2007 design was not well received by collectors. The product was also hampered by a series of repetitive "Mirror" inserts.

Barry Bonds, whose exclusive trading card deal with Topps expired at the end of 2006, re-upped with Topps in time for the second series.

Jason Varitek has his first Topps card as an active player, and his first Topps card since 1993 Stadium Club Murphy -- when he was depicted as a member of Team USA.

Brandon Morrow (#433), Daisuke Matsuzaka (#630), and Alex Gordon (#634) are the only notable rookie cards.

2007 marked a turning point in Topps' relationship with The Hobby and card collectors, as it was the first time the company resorted to base-card gimmickry as a means of generating interest in its product. Derek Jeter's base card (#40) was issued, without announcement, with images of Mickey Mantle and then-President George W. Bush Photoshopped into the background.

The card had the intended effect of creating "buzz" around Series One -- as if the product needed it -- as curious collectors were drawn into the frenzy. On the surface, that might seem like a good thing. Unfortunately, many of these uneducated marks mistook the card for another Billy Ripken-esque error, grossly overpaying for what was, at its core, an ordinary Derek Jeter base card with a gimmick attached.

Since 2007, virtually every Topps flagship baseball release -- and several of its other brands -- has featured some sort of gimmick, with the concepts becoming progressively more contrived and ridiculous with each passing year.

For the factory sets, Topps removed both Mantle and Bush from Jeter's card. Ironically, because relatively few factory sets were ever opened, the factory-set version of Jeter #40 may actually be scarcer than the gimmick version.

Topps accidentally printed Joe Nathan's biography on the reverse of Roy Halladay's card (#180). This was corrected in time for the factory set.

Ryan Z. Braun Signature Error

Ryan Z. Braun appeared in 35 games across two seasons for the Royals in 2006-07. Unfortunately, Topps printed the facsimile signature of the more famous Ryan J. Braun (2011 NL MVP) on the pitcher Braun's 2007 Topps rookie card (#262). Topps corrected this error in time for the factory set.

Wal-Mart Variations

In what would become an unfortunate taste of things to come, Topps randomly inserted into Series One packs sold only at Wal-Mart, the following four "variation" cards. Like gimmicks in future years, there is nothing on the card (other than the photo used) that differentiates the regular base card from the gimcrack.

Due to collector ambivalence, and the astronomical odds of finding one (1:3700/packs), few collectors are even aware of these card's existence.

Much like Barry Bonds, Mickey Mantle, and Alex Rodriguez before them, Josh Gibson got the Mirror treatment in Series One. No one knew EXACTLY how many home runs Gibson hit, but that didn't stop Topps from releasing this 110-card insert anyway.

Unlike the Bonds, Mantle, and A-Rod sets, there are no details on the specific home run on any of the Gibson cards. Each card is (literally) the same, with the exception of a foil-stamped number on the front. If you've got one, you've got them all.

Mickey Mantle Reprint Relic

Beginning with 2007 Topps Baseball Series One, each Topps flagship baseball release would contain a "Reprint Relic" of a classic Mickey Mantle Topps card. Series One has his 1952 Topps card while Series Two has the 1953 Topps. Each card is serial-numbered to the year of the original card minus 1900.

Target Factory Set Mantle Memorabilia

Inserted into specially-marked factory sets sold at Target stores were Mickey Mantle Memorabilia cards.

NOTE: Despite the fact that the front of each card declares "AUTHENTIC GAME-USED MEMORABILIA," the swatches of fabric mounted onto each card could not have possibly come from a New York Yankees jersey. Next year's product also had Target-exclusive Mickey Mantle Memorabilia factory sets; however, those swatches are labeled "AUTHENTIC MICKEY MANTLE MEMORABILIA." More than likely, these swatches came from Mantle's personal wardrobe.
