Description

1988 Topps is a 792-card set. One of the blander sets of the era, '88 Topps' long-run value has been hindered by the lackluster design, paucity of decent rookies, and overproduction -- as it was the dawn of The Junk Wax Era. Subsets include Record Breakers (1-7), All-Stars (386-407), Turn Back the Clock (661-665), and Team Leaders (scattered throughout the set). The manager cards also double as team checklists.

The key Rookie Cards in this set are Ellis Burks, Ken Caminiti, Tom Glavine, and Matt Williams.

Distribution

Wax: 36 packs per box, 15 cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: $0.40). 20 boxes per case.

Cello: 24 packs per box, 28 cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: $0.69).

Rack: 24 packs per box, 43 cards per pack (MSRP: $1.29). Three boxes per case.

Jumbo: 18 packs per box, 91 cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: $2.49).

Don Mattingly World of Baseball

A promo card of Don Mattingly for a proposed "Topps World of Baseball" set was produced. This card is identical to Mattingly's 1988 Topps base card EXCEPT, it is NOT licensed by Major League Baseball and as such, the team name on the front is listed as "NEW YORK-A.L." In addition the words "SPECIAL WORLD OF BASEBALL EDITION" is on the reverse side.

It is believed that this card was intended to promote a proposed baseball card set for the U.K. market. Topps would make a baseball card set for the U.K., but it looked nothing like this card.

• On early copies of card #3, there appears a white "triangle" next to Mark McGwire's left foot. This was quickly corrected.

• Early copies of card #4 have a block of text on the front that does not appear on other Record Breaker subset cards. This too, was also quickly corrected.

• Probably the most significant error card was that of #18 which had a photo of Yankee farm hand Steve George instead of Al Leiter. A correction was issued.

• Steve Carlton was on the provisional checklist as card #455; however, he was released after the '87 season and pulled from the '88 Topps checklist (to be replaced by Shawn Hillegas). Early copies of Checklist #4 (card #528 in the set), show card #455 as Carlton. Corrections were issued.

• Card #778 shows the word "PADRES" in either white or blue text. The white card is scarcer.

Parallels

In 1988, Topps allegedly produced 25,000 Tiffany sets which are identical to the regular issue set, except for the higher quality white cardboard stock and the addition of a protective UV coating giving the cards a high gloss. According to the site tiffanycards.com, sets with serial numbers as high as 29,000 have surfaced.

Box Bottoms

These "cards" were featured four to a box on the bottom of each waxbox. There were four different panels for a total of 16 cards. The set is lettered A-P rather than sequentially-numbered. When individually cut out, each card measures 2.5" X 3.5". The design is identical to that of the base set, only with light blue borders.

Glossy Send-Ins

This 60-card set was available by mailing in the special offer cards found in 1988 Topps wax packs. For six special offer cards, and a nominal shipping & handling fee of $1.25, collectors could choose one of six different "series" of Glossies, with two cards per series (cards ending in 9 and 0) featuring a "young star." For 18 special offer cards and $7.50 shipping and handling, collectors would receive the whole 60-card set.

The design of the set is identical to previous year's Glossies, except for a thin, magenta, border.
