In late 1998, Playoff Inc., a manufacturer of football cards, purchased the assets of Pinnacle Brands out of bankruptcy. Among the assets included the rights to the Donruss brand as that company had been acquired by Pinnacle in 1996. In early 2001, around the same time they received licenses from MLB Properties and the MLBPA, the company renamed itself "Donruss-Playoff LP."

On March 13th, 2009, Donruss-Playoff was acquired by the Italian firm Panini S.p.A. and was immediately renamed Panini America; however, the company continued to operate out of the old Donruss-Playoff offices in Arlington, Texas with the same management team.

"Donruss-Playoff" refers to the company's 2001-08 products.
