1949 Bowman

Description

In 1949, Bowman released a much larger set than the previous year. The set ballooned to 240 cards now with some color and tinted backgrounds in the pictures. The set was released in seven series of 48 cards each. Cards measure 2 1/16" by 2 1/2". Some card backs have the player's name printed, and others have the name in script.

Cards from the first two series (Cards #1-3 and #5-73) can be found with either white or gray backs.

Cards from the first three series (cards #1-108) do not have the player's name on the front; however, there are a number of Series Three variations with the player's name on the front.

Some cards from Series Four (#109-144) have a variation in which the player's name is in a scripted font.

Twelve cards that were printed along with the final series feature either a front or back name variation.

Notable rookie cards include: Robin Roberts, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Satchel Paige, Duke Snider, Richie Ashburn, Bob Lemon, Early Wynn and Gil Hodges.

Distribution

The cards were distributed in five card nickel packs that came 24 packs per box.
