1994 Donruss was a 660-card dual series set that featured 330 cards in each respectively.  This was Donruss' smallest base set since 1989 and also the first time in 5 years it did not increase from the previous year - prior to distribution, Leaf announced a drastic cut in production and afterwards confirmed that only 17,500 cases of each series were printedAll of this ironically aligned with the end of the Junk Wax and beginning of the Post Junk Wax Era.
1994 Donruss was a 660-card split into two 330-card series.

Additionally, Donruss rebranded their flagship offering as a "premium" level product, to directly compete with Topps' Stadium Club and Fleer's Ultra brands, along with Upper Deck and their own Leaf SetPackaging on boxes and packs advertised that each card was foil stamped - specifically, each base card set was printed on a glossy card stock with gold-foil stamping on the nameplate and brand name and a full-bleed, borderless, design.  Further, the number of inserts offered increased to eight - in addition to a parallel set - to seemingly answer the high demand for chase sets during this era that was gripped by the Insert Mania craze.

For the first time in the decade, the Donruss base set did not feature any subsets - only checklists.  There were no notable Rookie Cards in the set.

Reportedly each of Leaf/Donruss' 3,000+ Hobby accounts received one 11-card promotional pack that contained the full 10-card set plus one of two Special Edition parallel cards with their 1994 Donruss order form.  Further, Leaf's 42 retail broker accounts also received anywhere from five to ten 11-card promo packs for their presentations. From this information, approximately 3,500 11-card promo packs were printed.  Half the promo packs received the Barry Bonds Special Edition parallel, the other half a Frank Thomas Special Edition.

For the first time ever, Donruss included a parallel set.  Special Edition was a 100-card partial parallel featuring holographic gold foil on both sides of the card - over the nameplate on the front and on a Special Edition stamp on the back.  The first 50 cards in the set paralleled cards 1-50 in Series 1, while the second 50 cards paralleled cards 331-380 in Series 2.

The notable Diamond Kings insert continued in in 1994 with a 30-card set split evenly across Series 1 and 2, highlighting the top stars in the game at the time.  However, for the first time since 1984, the Diamond Kings insert had a different design and from this point forward would have a new design every year.  Each Diamond King card was still portrait rendition by famed artist Dick Perez but featured a new, red holofoil "Diamond Kings" block text design above the portrait and a cursive player nameplate.

Description

1994 Donruss was a 660-card split into two 330-card series.

1994 was a transition year for The Hobby as a whole, marking the end of the Junk Wax Era. Donruss reconfigured their annual flagship set as a "premium" level product, to directly compete with Topps' Stadium Club and Fleer's Ultra brands, along with Upper Deck's flagship brand, Pinnacle, and their own Leaf and Studio brands. Each card was printed on a glossy card stock with a borderless design and foil stamping on both the nameplate and brand name. Further, the number of insert sets offered increased to eight - in addition to a partial-parallel set - to seemingly answer the high demand for chase sets during this era that was still gripped by the Insert Mania craze.

Prior to distribution, Leaf announced that only 17,500 cases of each series would be produced -- a drastic production cut from the previous year's product.

The only subsets are Rated Rookies (which for the second straight year are scattered throughout the base set) and checklists. There are no notable rookies in the set.

This 10-card set set was issued to promote 1994 Donruss Baseball prior to its release. Each promo card had the same design of the base set but had the words, "Promotional Sample" printed diagonally across the front and back of the card and featured each player's 1992 stats in transparent stripes near the bottom.

Reportedly each of Leaf/Donruss' 3000+ Hobby accounts received one eleven-card promotional pack that contained the full ten-card set plus one of two Special Edition parallel cards with their 1994 Donruss order form. Further, Leaf's 42 retail broker accounts also received anywhere from five to ten eleven-card promo packs for their presentations. From this information, approximately 3500 eleven-card promo packs were printed. Half the promo packs received the Barry Bonds Special Edition parallel, the other half a Frank Thomas Special Edition.

Parallels

Special Edition

For the first time ever, Donruss included a parallel set. Special Edition was a 100-card partial parallel featuring holographic gold foil on both sides of the card - over the nameplate and team logo on the front and on a Special Edition stamp on the back. The first 50 cards in the set paralleled cards 1-50 in Series One, while the second 50 cards paralleled cards 331-380 in Series Two.

NOTE: The foil-stamped card numbers on the reverse side are very difficult to read.

Inserts

Diamond Kings

The notable Diamond Kings insert continued in in 1994 with a 30-card set split evenly across Series One and Two, highlighting the top stars in the game at the time. For the first time since 1984, the Diamond Kings insert had a different design and from this point forward would have a new design every year. Each Diamond King card was still portrait rendition by famed artist Dick Perez but featured a new, "cracked ice" red foil "Diamond Kings" block text design above the portrait and a cursive player nameplate.

Cards DK1-DK14 and DK29 (a "King of Kings" card of Dave Winfield) were inserted in Series One packs, while cards DK15-DK28 and DK30 (a self-portrait of Diamond Kings artist Dick Perez, which also served as the set's checkilst) were in Series Two.

Further, each Retail waxbox came packaged with a 5" X 7" oversized Diamond King card serial-numbered to 10,000 copies as a box topper.

This 20-card set highlighted the top hitters in the game on a full-bleed action photo card with a gold-foil stamped insert nameplate on the front. The ten Series One cards featured the top home run hitters from 1990 to 1993, while the ten Series Two cards depicted the decade's batting average leaders. The Dominators insert was randomly inserted in all packs.

Each Hobby waxbox came packaged with a 3 1/2" X 5" oversized Dominator card serial-numbered to 10,000 copies as a box topper.

The Elite Series

The fourth edition of the Donruss' notable Elite Series insert set which honored the best players in the game continued with a 12-card set split evenly across Series One and Two. Each Elite Series insert was printed on a matte silver-grey foil card with a marble background outlined in team colors and a diamond cutout of the player photo.

The set was sequentially numbered as a continuation of the set that begun in 1991, picking up from where the 1993 set left off. Cards 37-42 were randomly inserted in Series One and cards 43-48 were in Series Two. Each card was serial-numbered to 10,000 copies; however, because of the drastic cut in production for 1994 Donruss as a whole, it was noticeably easier to pull an Elite insert than in previous years.
