1997 Leaf | 1997 Leaf was a 400-card set released in two equal 200 card series. The set featured two subsets, Legacy (188-197/348-367) and Gamers (368-397) and notable rookie cards of Jose Cruz Jr., Brian Giles, and Hideki Irabu. | ||
To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's major league debut in 1948, Donruss/Leaf issued some collectible items. They made 42 all-leather jackets (issued to match Robinson's uniform number). There were also 311 leather jackets produced (to match Robinson's career batting average). 1,500 lithographs were also produced of which Rachel Robinson (Jackie's widow) signed 500 of them. | |||

Randomly inserted in packs, this 400-card set | Randomly inserted in packs, this 400-card set paralleled the base set. While the stated print runs below were provided at the time of release, many years later, there have been anecdotal stories detailing the backdoored release of extra copies across all players flooding the market after Pinnacle Brands’ bankruptcy. There were two types of Fractal Matrix parallels: | ||
* '''Regular''': Color player photos with either a bronze, silver, or gold etched-foil finish | |||
* '''Die-cut''': Color player photos with either a bronze, silver, or gold etched-foil finish and a "X-axis", "Y-axis", or "Z-axis" die-cut pattern | |||
Given that there were three Fractal Matrix colors (Bronze, Gold and Silver) and three die-cut patterns (X, Y, and Z), there were 9 Fractal Matrix distinctions: | |||
* Bronze X-axis: '''BX''' (die-cut version pictured) | |||
* Bronze Y-axis: '''BY''' | |||
* Bronze Z-axis: '''BZ''' | |||

In each series, 100 cards were designated Bronze, 60 Silver, and 40 Gold; 125 cards were designated X-Axis, 50 Y-Axis, and 25 Z-Axis: | |||
* For each card in the set that was designated as Bronze, there were 2000 total cards produced. | |||
* For each card in the set that was designated as Silver, there were 1000 total cards produced. | |||
* For each card in the set that was designated as Gold, there were 500 total cards produced. | |||
* For the die-cuts, the first 400 copies (regardless of color) of each X-Axis card are die-cut, the first 200 Y-Axis were die-cut, and the first 100 Z-Axis were die-cut. However, these were stated print runs and these parallels were not serially numbered. | |||
* While the stated print run of these were established at the time of the product’s release anecdotal accounts have stated that many non-pack-issued copies from this set hit the secondary market after Pinnacle’s Brands’ bankruptcy. This, some collectors question the veracity of the official stated print run numbers. | |||

All proceeds from the sale of the set went to the Thomas Foundation and only 2500 serial-numbered copies of each card was produced. | |||
Card #1 in the set featured Thomas with Hall of Famer Rod Carew. The back of the card pictured Carew's daughter Michelle who passed away from Leukemia in 1996. | |||

Randomly inserted in Series Two packs, this six-card set featured pieces of game-used materials from then-Leaf spokesman Frank Thomas. Only 100 of each card were produced and each were serial-numbered on the back. | |||
One of the landmark inserts in the Hobby, this set represented one of the earliest forays by an MLB-licensed manufacturer into game-used memorabilia inserts. While the [[1997 Upper Deck]] Game Jersey inserts were the first game-used jersey cards ever produced for baseball cards, the 1997 Frank Thomas collection inserts were the first game-used bat, batting glove, hat, and sweatband cards ever produced for baseball cards. Further, this set also marked the introduction of the first ever serially-numbered, game-used memorabilia items that are commonly seen in the modern era. | |||

Description
1997 Leaf was a 400-card set released in two equal 200 card series.

Parallels
Fractal Matrix
Randomly inserted in packs, this 400-card set paralleled the base set. While the stated print runs below were provided at the time of release, many years later, there have been anecdotal stories detailing the backdoored release of extra copies across all players flooding the market after Pinnacle Brands’ bankruptcy. There were two types of Fractal Matrix parallels:
- Regular: Color player photos with either a bronze, silver, or gold etched-foil finish
- Die-cut: Color player photos with either a bronze, silver, or gold etched-foil finish and a "X-axis", "Y-axis", or "Z-axis" die-cut pattern
Given that there were three Fractal Matrix colors (Bronze, Gold and Silver) and three die-cut patterns (X, Y, and Z), there were 9 Fractal Matrix distinctions:
- Bronze X-axis: BX (die-cut version pictured)
- Bronze Y-axis: BY
- Bronze Z-axis: BZ
- Silver X-axis: SX
- Silver Y-axis: SY (die-cut version pictured)
- Silver Z-axis: SZ
- Gold X-axis: GX
- Gold Y-axis: GY
- Gold Z-axis: GZ (die-cut version pictured)
In each series, 100 cards were designated Bronze, 60 Silver, and 40 Gold; 125 cards were designated X-Axis, 50 Y-Axis, and 25 Z-Axis:
- For each card in the set that was designated as Bronze, there were 2000 total cards produced.
- For each card in the set that was designated as Silver, there were 1000 total cards produced.
- For each card in the set that was designated as Gold, there were 500 total cards produced.
- For the die-cuts, the first 400 copies (regardless of color) of each X-Axis card are die-cut, the first 200 Y-Axis were die-cut, and the first 100 Z-Axis were die-cut. However, these were stated print runs and these parallels were not serially numbered.
- While the stated print run of these were established at the time of the product’s release anecdotal accounts have stated that many non-pack-issued copies from this set hit the secondary market after Pinnacle’s Brands’ bankruptcy. This, some collectors question the veracity of the official stated print run numbers.
This chart shows exactly how many of each card were produced.
| Regular/Die-cut | X-Axis | Y-Axis | Z-Axis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1600/400 | 1800/200 | 1900/100 |
| Silver | 600/400 | 800/200 | 900/100 |
| Gold | 100/400 | 300/200 | 400/100 |
For the Regular Fractal Matrix parallels, no card was available in more than one color meaning that each card in the set was specifically assigned to have a bronze, silver, or gold parallel. For the Fractal Matrix Die-Cuts, no card was available in more than one die-cut finish, meaning that each card in the set was specifically assigned to have a bronze, silver, or gold parallel and a specific X-axis, Y-axis, or Z-axis die-cut pattern. Additionally, the Regular Fractal Matrix cards do NOT designate which axis the card belongs to; however, the Die-cuts stated this information on the front of the card.
For the sake of brevity, each card's parallel color and axis is listed in the base set checklist above.
Inserts
Knot-Hole Gang
These cards were inserted across all Series One packs and featured a die-cut pattern that mimicked a wooden fence from a baseball playground and a hole that gave a window to the player's picture. Each card is serial-numbered to 5000 copies. Additionally, a promo edition of this set was also produced and distributed to dealers and The Hobby Media. The promos feature "SAMPLE" diagonal text on the front and back and are marked "PROMO/5000" on the back.

Get-A-Grip
This set was exclusive to Series One Hobby packs and featured die-cut cards printed on foil. The insert name is a pun as the die-cut pattern allowed you to "grip" the card in your hand and the card itself showed the different "grips" a pitcher uses to throw certain pitches. The front of the card featured a batter and the back of the card featured a pitcher. Each card is serial-numbered to 3500 copies.

Statistical Standouts
Leaf's flagship and annual insert, these cards were inserted across all Series One packs. This year, the card resembled a fielding glove: the card was die-cut and bi-layered so it "opened up" like a glove. This design was the first of its kind seen in the hobby. Each card is serial-numbered to 1000 copies.
NOTE: The "flap" was glued to the card with rubber cement, which should easily, but not always, rub off without damaging the card.

Leagues of the Nation

Jackie Robinson Scratch 'N Win Game Card
These "scratch-off" game cards were randomly inserted into Series Two packs and could be redeemed for prizes. Donruss/Leaf repurchased six 1949 Leaf Jackie Robinson cards and gave away five as part of this promotion; the sixth could be obtained by submitting non-winning Scratch 'N Win cards. Other prizes sch as commemorative leather jackets and lithographs were also prizes.
Frank Thomas Blister Card
Inserted on the top of each Series Two Blister pack is a special Frank Thomas card. The front of the card is a facsimile of his base card while the back has information on the 1997 Leaf set.
Frank Thomas "The Big Heart" Leukemia Charity
This four-card set was produced by Donruss as a fund raiser for the Frank Thomas Charitable Foundation. Thomas established the Foundation in memory of his sister, whom he lost to Leukemia. The cards could be ordered by mail for $20 each and information on how to order the cards was printed on each 1997 Leaf wrapper.

Game-Used
Frank Thomas Collection
Randomly inserted in Series Two packs, this six-card set featured pieces of game-used materials from then-Leaf spokesman Frank Thomas. Only 100 of each card were produced and each were serial-numbered on the back.
One of the landmark inserts in the Hobby, this set represented one of the earliest forays by an MLB-licensed manufacturer into game-used memorabilia inserts. While the 1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey inserts were the first game-used jersey cards ever produced for baseball cards, the 1997 Frank Thomas collection inserts were the first game-used bat, batting glove, hat, and sweatband cards ever produced for baseball cards. Further, this set also marked the introduction of the first ever serially-numbered, game-used memorabilia items that are commonly seen in the modern era.
