1998 Topps Gallery
Description
1998 Topps Gallery is a 150-card set released exclusively to The Hobby in the summer of 1998. The set is broken into five subsets (Expressionists, Exhibitions, Impressions, Portraits, and Permanent Collection), each with a different design (front and back). The card fronts are printed on a canvas-like substance and feature a color player photograph and a foil backing. The backs feature a small color player photograph, 1997 player stats by month, personal stats, and a paragraph with player highlights called Frame This!
Distribution
24 packs per box, six cards per pack (MSRP: $3). Hobby only.

All 150 base cards are available in the following parallels.
- Player's Private Issue (serial-numbered to 250 copies)
- Gallery Proofs (serial-numbered to 125 copies)
NOTE: All Player's Private Issue cards feature the same design, which is unique to this parallel. Gallery Proofs, on the other hand, have the same designs as the base cards, although the backs are in black & white. In addition, Player's Private Issue and Gallery Proofs are sequentially-numbered with an "PPI" and "GP" prefix, respectively.
Player's Private Issue Auction
Seeded at the rate of one-per-pack, Player's Private Issue Auction parallels the entire set. All 150 cards are available in four different "point values": 25, 50, 75, and 100 points. Collectors could then use their Auction cards to "bid" on one of ten different pieces of framed artwork (one for each of the following players: J. Gonzalez, M. McGwire, C. Ripken, Jr., M. Piazza, C. Jones, F. Thomas, D. Jeter, K. Griffey, Jr., A. Rodriguez and N. Garciaparra). Point totals were doubled, however, when the player featured on the Auction card was the same player actually being bid on.
The auction period ran from July 4th through October 16th, 1998. During that time period, collectors had to mail in their accumulated bid points and specify which of the ten pieces they were bidding upon. An "800" number was available for collectors to check upon the status of the current high bid, allowing them the opportunity to submit additional bid points prior to the October 16th closing date. Winners were notified 30 days after the closing date. Auction point cards were not returned.
Printing Plates
1998 Topps Gallery was one of the first Topps products that contained Printing Plates. Unlike future Plates, the four front AND four back plates for all 150 base cards were inserted.
