The first series of Topps' flagship has been out for a couple of weeks, and as usual, there are many unannounced surprises. Over 50 players have a "Twink" variation, with these cards falling at about one-per-case. Many collectors have reported that the manufactured Glove Nameplate "relic" cards are falling apart right out of the pack. The mad scramble for Diamond Giveaway code cards are keeping the price of wax in the $65-$69/box range for Hobby and $109-$119/box for HTA. | The first series of Topps' flagship has been out for a couple of weeks, and as usual, there are many unannounced surprises. Just released2011 Topps Gypsy Queen was released April 25, 2011. Collectors are discovering that Gypsy Queen is a drastically different product than what Topps originally advertised in late 2010. The base set has been reduced to 350 cards, and Hobby boxes are yielding one less autograph. In addition, there are numerous inserts (Sticky Fingers, Wall Climbers) that were not on the original sell-sheets. We will have more information on Gypsy Queen as it becomes available.
2011 Topps Tribute was released on April 11, 2011. Each five card pack will yield either an autograph or relic card serial-numbered to 99 copies or less, and a parallel serial-numbered to 399 copies or less. The base set, like last year, will consist of 100 cards and there are no on-card autographs -- just stickers and cuts. Unlike last year, all cards will be of actual baseball players.
2011 Topps Heritage was released on March 15, 2011. In it's 11th year, the design of year's Heritage release mimics the design of 1962 Topps. Unlike previous releases, there are color variation sets found only in retail.
2011 Topps Opening Day was released on March 5, 2011 -- about a month before the actual opening day. As has become custom for this brand, the design of the base set is recycled from the 2011 Topps set. Unlike 2011 Topps Series One many of the players who have changed teams during the off season are depicted in their new airbrushed uniforms.
2011 In The Game Heroes & Prospects Series One was released on February 24. Known for their "high-end" hockey and multi-sport releases, this is In The Game's first ever baseball card release. Each five-card pack will contain four autographs and either A) a fifth autograph, B) a cut autograph, or C) a game-used memorabilia card. As with their hockey cards, ITG does not have either an MLB or MiLB license, and as such all visible logos have been concealed.
2011 Topps Series One, was released on February 2. 2011 Topps will mark the company's 60th anniversary in baseball cards, and a number of "Diamond Anniversary" themed inserts and promotions have been added. Included are Diamond Card Giveaway code cards (similar to the Million Card Giveaway in 2010), Legends variations, diamond variations (similar to the pie cards in 2010), Diamond parallels, retail black and retro parallels and many other inserts. Topps also announced a wrapper redemption program for Series 1.
2010 Bowman Sterling is a 50-card, rookie and prospect-laden product, was released on January 18th. Each five-card pack will include: a rookie card, a MLB Future Star insert, two autographs, and a Team USA autograph or relic card. Each six-pack box will also include a dual autograph card and a dual Relic box topper.
2010 Bowman Platinum is a new, prospect-laden, product that was released exclusively to retail outlets the week of December 6, 2010. The Hobby version was released December 28, 2010. The base set consists of 100 veterans and rookies with a 50 card Prospects set. The base set will be printed on foil-board while the Prospects will be on chromium stock.
2010 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects was released to the hobby on December 13th, 2010. The base set consists of 110 rookies (Greens) supplemented by a 110-card Prospects insert set (blues). For the first time, the Prospects set will feature the 18 members of the 2010 USA Baseball 16U National Team. Each seven-card pack will include two Greens, three Blues, and two Chrome (a blue and a green) cards. Unlike years past, there will not be a one-per-pack Gold parallel in Hobby packs -- only retail.
2010 Topps Sterling was released on November 22, 2010. Each box contains one theme pack and one mystery pack. Theme packs contain 3 base cards plus one relic card numbered to 25 and one autographed relic or relic card numbered to 10 or less. Mystery packs contain one framed parallel card numbered to 50 or less or one numbered cut signature card.
2010 Bowman Chrome arrived on November 2nd, 2010. Each 18-pack Hobby box will include at least one autograph, and each four-card pack include two Prospects and two veteran/rookies. The autograph checklist will consist of 40 prospects who did not appear in 2010 Bowman, and Stephen Strasburg. The 220-card Chrome set will consist of 180 veterans (reds) and 40 rookies (greens), and 110 Chrome Prospects.
2010 Topps Update was released October 21, 2010. The 331 card base set includes 55 rookies, including the Stephen Strasburg card (#661) previously inserted into factory sets. Each 36-pack Hobby box will include one autograph or relic card and a Chrome Rookie Refractor parallel. Each Jumbo box will yield one autograph, one relic, one manufactured Bat Barrel card and a Chrome Rookie Refractor.
Arriving on October 5, 2010, 2010 Topps Chrome features a 220 base set consisting of 170 veterans and 50 rookie cards. Inserts include chrome versions of Chicle, Heritage and T206 cards. The Heritage chrome cards will be a continuation of the chrome parallels found in Heritage. In an effort to placate collectors who pre-ordered Topps Chrome before Stephen Strasburg's season ending injury; Topps has announced a wrapper redemption program. Collectors who sent in a full Hobby box's worth of wrappers (24), will receive three "variation" cards from a special 15-card set.

Hobby buzzTopps Gypsy Queen Upon the release of Gypsy Queen, there is talk abound the hobby about limited availability. It appears that only small amounts of Gypsy Queen are being made available to collectors, hobby shops, online retailers, etc... Some long-time set builders are debating on buying retail rather than hobby due to the high initial cost of hobby boxes. 2011 Topps The first series of Topps' flagship has been out for a couple of weeks, and as usual, there are many unannounced surprises. Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Prices are holding steady for BDP&P at $55-$65 a box and $625-$675 a case. Debates among prospectors about the long-term value of 2010 BDP&P and when to sell are abundant. Bowman Chrome The price of 2010 Bowman Chrome is on the decline. Cases are now selling for $450-$500 each (about $40/box). It appears that Topps overproduced Bowman Chrome. An estimated 9,000-10,000 cases were produced. Most likely due to declining prices on Bowman Chrome, Topps recently announced a hobby redemption wrapper contest. Details of the contest can be found on the 2010 Bowman Chrome page and in the Topps press release. |
