Description
2021 & 2022 Bowman Heritage are a pair of 250-card sets released exclusively on topps.com on March 29th, 2023. The two products were sold as a bundle -- meaning, for each box of the 2022 product, you had to also buy a box of 2021. Each two-box bundle sold for $249.99.
2021 Bowman Heritage
2021 Bowman Heritage was originally intended for release in January 11th, 2022, but postponed indefinitely. As is the Heritage brand's trademark, the base set is patterned after the 1993 Bowman set. Each ten-card pack was to include two Chrome parallels, and each 24-pack box was to have yielded an autograph.
It is currently unclear as to why '21 Bowman Heritage was delayed, as Topps has been tight-lipped on the subject. At the 2023 Topps Industry Summit, Topps said that 2021 Bowman Heritage was, in fact, produced, and was sitting in a warehouse. They still did not explain why it was not distributed.
It has been speculated that the MLBPA cancelled the product in retaliation for Topps including "true" rookie cards of Minor Leaguers (i.e. non-dues paying MLBPA members) in 2021 Bowman's Best, as the provisional checklist for Bowman Heritage included potentially hundreds more "true" rookies of prospects. It should be noted that both Best and Heritage were developed during the time after it was announced that Fanatics would be taking over the exclusive MLB/MLBPA license, but before Topps was acquired by Fanatics.
As the product was eventually released in 2023, baseballcardpedia DOES NOT recognize any 2021 Bowman Heritage cards as "true" rookie cards.
2022 Bowman Heritage
2022 Bowman Heritage is a 100-card set supplemented by a 150-card "Prospects" insert. Unlike 2021 Heritage, and more in line with other Bowman-branded products, the Prospects are sequentially-numbered separately. The design is based on the 1994 Bowman set. Each 24-pack Hobby box will yield an autograph.
