2002 Upper Deck Diamond Connection

Description

2002 Upper Deck Diamond Connection is an experimental 630-card set released in two separate series. The basic Diamond Connection product was issued on August 12, 2002 and contained the first 536 cards.

The first 90 cards featured veteran players while cards #91-#200 make up the "DC Rookies" subset. All 110 DC Rookies are serial-numbered to 1500 copies.

The remaining 336 base set cards all featured memorabilia pieces and were printed to various stated print runs. We have notated that information as to each cards print run.

Each 14-pack Hobby box was sub-divided into two, seven-pack mini-boxes (similar to Donruss-Playoff's "Donruss Classics" brand). Each mini-box should have yielded one DC Rookie, one game-used bat, and one game-used jersey card. Unfortunately, each mini-box was packed out short one jersey or bat card. Upper Deck would remedy that situation by later issuing "Redemption Packs" through their network of wholesale distributors who then sent the packs to their dealers. Each "Redemption Pack" contains two base cards, one game-used bat or jersey card, and a (expired) redemption card good for a "Bat Around Quad" card. It's believed that most (if not all) of cards #537-#570 were distributed exclusively in the Redemption Packs.

NOTE: The Redemption Packs have the same wrapper as the regular Diamond Connection packs, but with a white sticker on the front explaining the Redemption Pack program.

The final 60 cards in the set (#571-#630) were distributed in mid-December, 2002 within packs of 2002 Upper Deck Rookie Update. Cards 571-600 featured veterans on new teams and were commonly distributed in all packs. Cards 601-630 featured prospects and were serial-numbered to 1999 copies.

Despite having 140 serial-numbered DC Rookies, there are no notable rookies in the set.

Distribution

Diamond Connection Series: Two, seven-pack, mini-boxes per box. Five cards per pack (MSRP: $7). Hobby exclusive.

Redemption Packs: Two base, one game-used, and one Bat Around Quad exchange card per pack. Distributed exclusively to Hobby outlets as compensation.

Rookie Update Series: 15 packs per box, four cards per pack. Hobby exclusive.

Memorable Signatures Bat

Each Memorable Signatures Bat card has both a bat chip and an autograph. All autographs of dead players are cuts. All autographs for living players are "trapped" cuts. The club's respective wordmark was burnt onto each bat chip. Each is serial-numbered to the production figures listed.

Bat Around Quad Bat

Inside each Redemption Pack was an exchange card good for one of 30 "Bat Around Quad" cards. Each Bat Around Quad had game-used bat chips from four different players. Each card was also available in a Gold parallel, serial-numbered to 50 copies. The exchange cards had a mailing deadline of September 26th, 2005.
