1987 Donruss

Description

1987 Donruss is a 660-card set. All packs included three pieces of a Roberto Clemente puzzle and the factory sets contained a complete puzzle.

Considered last set in the "Golden Age of Donruss," the regular-issue cards feature a black and gold border on the front that is very condition sensitive. Quality control issues plague the wax edition of the product. Collectors seeking Gem Mint copies of '87 Donruss cards are advised to look for a factory set.

The backs of the cards in the factory sets are oriented differently than cards taken from wax packs, giving the appearance that one version or the other is upside down when sorting from the card backs. There are no premiums or discounts for either version.

The popular Diamond King subset returns for the sixth consecutive year. Some of the Diamond King (1-26) selections are repeats from prior years; Perez-Steele Galleries had indicated in 1987 that a five-year rotation would be maintained in order to avoid depleting the pool of available worthy "kings" on some of the teams. The rich selection of Rookie Cards in this set include Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Kevin Brown, Will Clark, David Cone, Chuck Finley, Bo Jackson, Wally Joyner, Barry Larkin, Greg Maddux and Rafael Palmeiro.

This 28-card set parallels the Diamond King subset and was available through a mail-in offer detailed on the wax packs. The set was available for $8.00 and three 1987 Donruss Baseball wrappers plus $1.50 postage and handling. The set features all 26 Donruss Diamond Kings, the Diamond King Checklist, and the Roberto Clemente Puzzle Card in large (approximately 4 7/8" X 6 13/16") form.

Box Bottoms

These four cards were printed on the bottoms of '87 Donruss wax boxes. The four cards (PC10 to PC12 plus a Roberto Clemente puzzle card) are considered a separate set in their own right and are not typically included in a complete set of the regular issue 1987 Donruss cards. The value of the panel uncut is slightly greater, perhaps by 25 percent greater, than the value of the individual cards cut up carefully.
