Description
1998 Upper Deck is a 751-card set issued in three series of 270, 270 and 211 cards. The third series is officially known as the "Rookie Edition." As a unique addition, each card fronts features game dated photographs of some of the season's most memorable moments.
The following subsets are contained within the set: History in the Making (1-8/361-369), Griffey's Hot List (9-18), Define the Game (136-153), Season Highlights (244-252/532-540/748-750), Star Rookies (253-288/541-600), Postseason Headliners (415-432), Upper Echelon (451-459) and Eminent Prestige (601-630). The Eminent Prestige subset cards were unintentionally short-printed (approximately 1:4 packs) and Upper Deck offered a free service to collectors trying to finish their sets whereby 18 random Eminent Prestige cards were mailed to collectors who sent in proof of purchase of one-and-a-half Rookie Edition boxes.
There are two different versions of 681. About half the cards depict Mike Piazza as a New York Met while the other half commemorate Piazza's one week stint as a Florida Marlin. The Rookie Edition Series set is considered complete with both versions.
Notable Rookie Cards include Gabe Kapler and Magglio Ordonez.

Griffey's Home Run Chronicles
This 56-card set commemorates each of Ken Griffey Jr.'s American League leading 56 home runs from his 1997 season. The first 30 cards were randomly inserted into Series One packs, while cards 31-56 were in Series Two. The design is identical to that of the 10th Anniversary Preview inserts. Each card is notated on the back with what date each homer was hit. Series Two cards feature photos from the actual games in which the homers were hit.
For brevity's sake, since all cards feature Ken Griffey, Jr. we have chosen not to list each individual card.
10th Anniversary Preview
Randomly inserted in Series One packs, this 60-card set features a design similar to the inaugural 1989 Upper Deck series. The backs carry a photo of a previous Upper Deck card of that player. A 10th Anniversary Ballot was inserted into every fourth Series One pack which allowed the collector to vote for the players they wanted to see in a proposed 1999 Upper Deck tenth anniversary set. The set was canceled, and instead became an insert in 1999 Upper Deck Series One.
Upper Deck also released a "Preview Edition" factory set to selected retail outlets. The Preview Edition contained a complete set of all 60 10th Anniversary cards, as well as 200 randomly selected 1997 Collector's Choice base cards and sold for $19.99. The difference between the two sets are the words "PREVIEW EDITION" printed on the side of each card.
