Description

1997 Donruss is a 550-card issued in two separate series of 270 and 280 cards respectively. (The second series was issued as "Donruss Update," however since the set is numbered as an extension of Series One, it is considered part of this set.)

The following subsets are included within the set: Checklists (267-270/448-450), Rookies (353-397), Hit List (398-422), King of the Hill (423-437) and Interleague Showdown (438-447). Rookie Cards in this set include Jose Cruz Jr., Brian Giles and Hideki Irabu.

Exclusive to all Series One packs, the 1997 Diamond Kings are a ten-card set that commemorates the 15th Anniversary of the original Diamond Kings. Dan Gardner replaced longtime DK artist Dick Perez, and for the first time not all MLB teams were represented with a DK.

Each card is serial-numbered to 10,000 copies with the first 500 printed on a canvas-like substance. As part of a promotion, collectors who found their card serial-numbered "01982/10000" could redeem their card for the original artwork.

Cal Ripken: The Only Way I Know

This special 10-card autobiographical tribute to Cal Ripken Jr. delivers a one-of-a-kind inside look at the modern day "Iron Man," and was meant to promote Ripken's book of the same name The first nine cards in the set were randomly seeded into packs of Donruss Update, while Card #10 was available exclusively in his book, "The Only Way I Know." Ripken autographed 2131 of these #10 cards and they were randomly inserted into the books. Because of it's separate distribution, #10 is not commonly included in complete sets, thus the mainstream set is considered complete with cards 1-9.

Only 5000 of each of the first nine cards were produced. Card #10 is not serial-numbered.

This 24-card set features the league's top hitters printed on a micro-etched, all-foil card stock with holographic foil stamping. Using a "fractured" printing structure, 12 players utilize a green (GR) finish and are numbered to 4000. Eight players are printed on all blue (B) finish and number to 2000, with the last four players utilizing a gold (G) finish and are numbered to 1000.

The first 250 copies of each card, irregardless of color, are die-cut.
