Topps' initial solicitation for 2017 Archives promised "wide-ranging improvements," and one such improvement (and a major one, if that) was the subtraction of "high-number" short-prints to the base set. In the previous two years, Archives was solicited as a 300 card base set without short-prints, only for Topps to deliver a final product with SPed base cards (30 in 2015 and ten in 2016). Another "addition-by-subtraction" improvement was the elimination of a celebrity/movie tie-in; replaced by a 23-card reprint insert of all of Derek Jeter's ''Topps Baseball'' base cards. | Topps' initial solicitation for 2017 Archives promised "wide-ranging improvements," and one such improvement (and a major one, if that) was the subtraction of "high-number" short-prints to the base set. 1991 Bazooka is a 22-card set produced by Topps. Also known as the "Shining Stars," the set's design is similar to the year's Topps Baseball base set. One card was inserted into specially-marked boxes of Bazooka bubble gum. Just released2017 Topps Archives is a 300-card set, released May 31st. As has been this brand's trademark, one third of the base set is done in the style of the 1960 Topps set (which was the basis of 2009 Topps Heritage), one third as 1982 Topps (which was used as one of the designs in 2013 Topps Archives), and the final third 1992 Topps. Another "addition-by-subtraction" improvement was the elimination of a celebrity/movie tie-in; replaced by a 23-card reprint insert of all of Derek Jeter's Topps Baseball base cards. Each 24-pack Hobby box will yield two autographs and two Derek Jeter Retrospective inserts. 2017 Topps Pro Debut is a 200-card Minor League set released May 26th, 2017. Each 24-pack Hobby box will yield two Relics and two autographs. 2017 Topps Inception is a 139-card set released May 19th, 2017. The product has been reconfigured from the previous year's product, yet still maintains the heavily Photoshop filtered look and feel. As the name suggests, the product has been re-branded from Bowman to Topps, and with that rebranding is a focus away from rookies and prospects and towards current Major League players. A conventional base set has been added, and includes a 39-card Rookie Autographs subset. In addition, the number of autographs per box has been reduced from five to only one. Each 16-box case should yield four Autographed Patches, one Autographed Jumbo Patch, and a Silver Signings card. 2017 Topps BUNT is a 200-card "physical" card set based on, and with many ties to, the popular Topps Bunt digital card game. 2017 Bowman is a 100-card set, supplemented by a 150-card Prospects "insert" set, released April 26th. Each Hobby box will come with one autograph, while hobby-exclusive Jumbo boxes will yield three. It should be noted that while Topps is billing 2017 Bowman as the "70th Anniversary," it is actually the 69th as the first Bowman set was released in 1948. 2017 Diamond Kings is a 175-card set featuring simulated artwork. Each pack will contain one insert and every 12-pack Hobby box is expected to yield two autographs/game-used cards. 2017 Honus Bonus Baseball is a 500-card trading card game. The set is being produced and distributed by Rittenhouse Archives, a noted producer of non-sports cards. This is Rittenhouse's first baseball set, but not their first sports card product as they have had the WNBA license for a few years. Due to their exclusive license with Topps, Honus Bonus is NOT licensed by MLB Properties and does not have logos. The product is licensed by the MLBPA. Each card will have a unique code (concealed by a silver "scratcher" bar) that, when entered onto the Honus Bonus website, can be used as part of an on-line fantasy baseball game. 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen is a 320-card set. In response to lagging sales and collector interest, Topps has reconfigured the Gypsy Queen brand at a lower price point. Gone are the one-per-pack mini parallels, as well as the two-per-Hobby box Relics -- although each 24-pack Hobby box will continue to yield two autographs. The ten-card "mini-box," which had been a Gypsy Queen staple, is also replaced by an oversized GQ Reflections box topper. 2017 Topps Tribute is a 90-card set released March 29th. As usual, each pack contains either an autograph or a Relic. 2017 Panini Stars & Stripes is a 100-card set featuring current and former members of USA Baseball national and junior national teams. Curiously, while the set was released during the 2017 World Baseball Classic, it does not feature the 2017 USA WBC team (Topps has the WBC license). Each pack will contain one parallel and either an autograph or a game-used card. 2017 Topps Opening Day will be released March 17th. As usual, the base set is a rehash of 200 cards from the Topps flagship. Each pack will yield one insert -- which are original to the product. Unlike in previous year's, some inserts are noticeably tougher to pull. 2017 Donruss is a 195-card set released by Panini America on March 8th. Each Hobby box will yield three autographs/game-used cards. 2017 Topps Heritage is a 500-card set based on the design of 1968 Topps and was released March 1st. Each 24-pack Hobby box will yield either an autograph or a Relic. In a notable change to the base set's composition, the number of "high-number" short-prints has been increased from 75 to 100. 2017 Topps Series One was released February 1st. For the third consecutive year, Series One base set will consist of 350 cards. And for the second straight year, the set will have a borderless design. Once again, each 36-pack Hobby box will yield either an autograph or a Relic, while Hobby Jumbo boxes will one of each plus a manufactured "Relic." 2016 National Treasures was released by Panini, exclusively to Hobby outlets, on December 30th. All cards feature an autograph and/or piece of game-used memorabilia. Every eight-card box will yield one "booklet" card. 2016 Bowman's Best will be released December 21st. The base set is 65 cards and is supplemented by a 35-card Prospects set. Each 12-pack Hobby box will yield four autographs and an Atomic Refractor parallel. 2016 Panini Elite Extra Edition is a 180-card draft pick/prospect set scheduled for release December 14th. In a restructuring of the brand, every base card will be serial-numbered to 999 copies, and every pack will contain at least one autograph and either a second autograph or a game-used memorabilia card. Extra Edition will feature the first baseball card of former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow. 2016 Bowman Draft is a 200-card set scheduled for release December 9th. After a one-year experiment featuring exclusively draft picks, the brand will feature both 2016 MLB Draft picks (120 in all) and 80 Prospects. In addition, the conventional Hobby waxbox has been shelved in favor of Jumbo and Super Jumbo boxes. 2016 Topps Transcendent is scheduled for release December 9th. Produced to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Topps Baseball, this one-of-a-kind product, which will be limited to 65 factory sets, is the most expensive baseball card product ever released. Each factory set, which is packaged in a Halliburton-style aluminum case contains the following:
2016 Topps Dynasty was released December 7th. As with previous Dynasty sets, each box will contain an encased autographed patch card serial-numbered to ten copies or less. 2016 Dynasty will feature the first Derek Jeter autographed cards Topps has issued since 2000 Topps HD. 2016 Panini Pantheon was released November 23rd, 2016. The product will feature retired players exclusively and all cards will be either an autograph or a game-used memorabilia card. 2016 Topps High Tek was released November 23rd. As usual, all cards are printed on acetate with multiple background pattern parallels. Each eight-card box will contain one parallel and one autograph. 2016 Topps Gold Label is a 300-card set scheduled for release October 21st. As with the Gold Label sets of the late-90s, the set features 100 different players on three different "Class" cards: 1, 2, and 3. Each seven-pack Hobby box will yield one Framed Autograph. 2016 Topps Update is a 300-card set (100 cards smaller than the previous year's set), released October 19th, 2016. As usual, each Hobby box will yield one autograph or Relic, while Jumbo boxes will have one autograph and two Relics. This set will have the first Topps flagship card of Baltimore Orioles All-Star catcher Matt Wieters. |
