Description
The 2001 Donruss Elite set (the second baseball product issued by Donruss-Playoff) was released to The Hobby in May 2001. The all foil-board base set consists of 200 cards with the last 50 cards making up a rookie subset. Each rookie is serial-numbered to 1000 copies, with the first 100 part of the die-cut and autographed "Turn of the Century" parallel. Each 24-pack waxbox yielded one serial-numbered rookie, one Extra Edition exchange card, one serial-numbered parallel, three serial-numbered inserts, and two autographed/game used cards.
Elite Extra Edition
The last 50 cards in the base set (cards 201-250) were issued as exchange coupons for unspecified rookies and prospects, and randomly seeded into packs at a rate of 1:14. Unlike other similar exchange programs, each coupon cost $5.99 to redeem and initially the checklist was not to be revealed until after the November 1, 2001 expiration date. This program was not well received by collectors, and forced Donruss-Playoff to announced in late October a provisional checklist and to extend the deadline to January 20th, 2002.
In April, 2002 representatives at Donruss-Playoff released the production figures for each of the Elite Extra Edition cards. All of these cards are actually serial-numbered "XXX/1000" on back but were mailed out in random order, meaning that, although Donruss-Playoff said that only 556 copies of Mark Prior's card were issued, some collectors received a Prior card with a serial-number above 556 -- all of which defeated the whole purpose of the serial-numbering.
In February 2002, Donruss-Playoff announced that all remaining cards were destroyed; however, in future D-P baseball releases a fair number of 2001 Elite Extra Edition "buybacks" were inserted.
Distribution
24 packs per box, five cards per pack. MSRP $3.99, Hobby only.

Parallels
Status/Aspiration
These two parallels are serial-numbered to a combined total of 100 copies. The Aspiration is numbered to the player's uniform number, while the Status is numbered to 100 minus the uniform number.
Turn of the Century
The first 100 serial-numbered copies of the 50-card rookie subset (cards 151-200), is paralleled with a die-cut and (for 48 of the 50 cards) an on-card autograph of the player. Many players, including Albert Pujols, did not return their cards in time for inclusion in the product and therefore were available as redemptions (all of which expired May 1, 2003). Cards 195 and 198 (Ichiro and Tsuyoshi Shinjo, respectively) were issued without autographs, as both players were under an exclusive autograph contract to Upper Deck.
Inserts
Passing the Torch
Randomly inserted in packs, this 24-card set features color action photos of legendary players and up-and-coming phenoms printed on holo-foil board. Cards with single players were sequentially numbered to 1000 while those with two players were numbered to 500.

Elite Extra Edition Autographs
These certified autograph cards were made available as a compensation by Donruss-Playoff to collectors for autograph exchange cards that the manufacturer was unable to fulfill in the 2001 season. Each card is serial-numbered of 100 on front. Unlike most Donruss-Playoff autograph cards from 2001, the athletes signed the actual card rather than signing a sticker (of which was then affixed to the card at a later date). The cards first started to appear on the secondary market in April, 2002.

Passing the Torch Autographed
Randomly inserted in packs, this 22-card set is a partial autographed parallel version of the regular insert set printed on double-sided holo-foil board. Cards with single players were sequentially numbered to 100 while those with dual players were numbered to 50. Nearly all of these cards were not available in time for insertion into packs and collectors had until May 1st, 2003 to redeem them. Wade Boggs, Todd Helton, Stan Musial and Nolan Ryan were the only players to return their cards in time for them to be seeded into packs. Cards PT22, PT23 and PT24 were actually 2001 Donruss Elite football exchange cards that were erroneously placed into baseball packs. To honor their commitment to collectors that pulled these cards - the manufacturer created three additional dual autograph baseball cards. These cards are tagged in our checklist with an "FB" status to indicate their origin. The set contains two separate cards numbered PT22 because of this same football snafu - whereby it's theorized that the baseball was originally intended to be complete at 22 cards. The three additional football exchange cards expanded the set to 25 cards and also created two separate PT22 cards.

Throwback Threads Autographs
Randomly inserted in packs, this 15-card set is a partial parallel autographed version of the regular insert set. Exchange cards with a May 1st, 2003 redemption deadline were seeded into packs for almost the entire set. Only Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew and Stan Musial managed to return their cards in time for packout. 2001 Donruss Elite football exchange cards were erroneously seeded into baseball packs for cards TT21 and TT22. The quantity for Ernie Banks signed cards was never revealed by the manufacturer.
