Description

1997 Topps is a 495-card set released in two series of 275 and 220 cards, respectively.

Card 42 is a special Jackie Robinson tribute card commemorating the 50th anniversary of his contribution to baseball history and numbered for his Dodgers uniform number.

Topps announced in 1996 that beginning in 1997, card number 7 would no longer exist in future Topps Baseball sets; it would be "retired" in honor of Mickey Mantle. Card number 84 does not exist because Mike Fetters' card was incorrectly numbered 61. Card number 277 does not exist because Chipper Jones' card was incorrectly numbered 276.

Rookie Cards include Kris Benson and Eric Chavez.

Factory sets were produced, but in much more limited quantity than in previous years.

This 27-card set reprints reprints vintage Willie Mays Topps and Bowman cards. Each card front is highlighted by a special commemorative gold foil stamp. Randomly inserted in first series hobby packs only (at the rate of one in 2,400) are personally signed cards (see below).

The "base" cards were inserted into Series One packs, while Finest and Finest Refractor versions were in Series Two. Each factory set contained one hermetically sealed "Last Day Production" Reprint of Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays.

A special 4 1/4" by 5 3/4" jumbo reprint of the 1952 Topps Willie Mays card was made available exclusively in special Series One Wal-Mart Blaster boxes. Each box (shaped much like a cereal box) contained ten eight-card retail packs and the aforementioned jumbo card and retailed for $10.

According to Topps, Mays signed about 65 copies of each of the following reprint cards: 51B, 52T, 53T, 55B, 55T, 57T, 58T, 60T, 60T AS, 61T, 61T AS, 63T, 64T, 65T, 66T, 69T, 70T, 72T, 73T. The cards are NOT serial-numbered but all have a "Certified Topps Autograph" stamp on them.

A special "Derek Jeter Rookie of the Year" autographed card was randomly inserted into all Series Two packs.
