2007 SP Rookie Edition hobby box

Description

2007 SP Rookie Edition is a 284-card set released August 17, 2007. The set features a 142-card short set with another 142 short-printed "rookie" cards done in the style of previous SP Baseball sets. Unfortunately, since many of the same players are repeated in the SPs, only the "2007" design cards are considered the "true" RCs.

Each 14-pack Hobby box is expected to yield 2 autographs.

Autographs

Each of the 184 rookie subset cards (cards #101-#284) was intended to be released in a autographed sticker parallel. However, Hideki Okajima did not agree to sign for this release, bringing the set total down to 180 cards. Additionally, some cards, including all four of the Daisuke Matsuzaka cards, were packed out as redemptions (which expired in 2009). Upper Deck was never able to fulfill the Matsuzaka redemptions, further bringing the set total down to a final 176 cards.

It's important to note that a couple of counterfeit Matsuzaka autographs from this set have emerged on the market: a 1993 SP design and a 1996 SP design. The autographed stickers on these cards are legitimate and contain authentic Matsuzaka autographs, but these cards were not issued by Upper Deck. It appears that a couple of autographed stickers were lifted from other Matsuzaka releases and then placed on a couple of his cards from this release.

Besides the autographed sticker, there are many ways to differentiate between the non-autographs and the autographs. All non-autographs contain a silver Upper Deck hologram on the back, and it is a regular diamond-shape, whereas, all autographs contain a gold hologram on the back, and it is diamond-shaped with a horizontal bar through the center. Also, non-autographs contain a sentence or short paragraph on the back about the player, as well as, a player statistics line. The autographs, on the other hand, contain a congratulatory message in place of the sentence or short paragraph, and a facsimile signature from former Upper Deck CEO Richard McWilliam in place of the player statistics line.

The differences mentioned above are shared by all four SP designs. However, there additional differences that are unique to each of the four designs. See each subset below for more detailed information.

Several of the autographed parallels are short-printed. These are denoted below by "SP". Cards that were offered through redemptions are denoted by "EXCH".

2007 SP Rookie Card Design

All autographs in this design contain a gold foil box on the front of the card "behind" the players name, as well as, a vertical gold stripe which divides the two pictures. Additionally, the picture on the right will have a gold tint. On the non-autographs, all of these elements are silver. To the contrary, all autographs in this design have a silver-colored background on the back side of the card, whereas, the non-autographs have a gold-colored background on the back.
