Description
1992 Fleer was a 720-card set. For the first time ever, the previous year's World Series champion would NOT lead off the base set. Rather, the set was ordered alphabetically by player within each team, for each League, with the American League preceding National League. (e.g. the Baltimore Orioles led off the set, followed by the Boston Red Sox, and concluding with the San Francisco Giants.) This was done to ensure that 1992 Fleer Baseball would be available as soon as the new year began. There were five subsets plus Checklist cards (714-720):
- Major League Prospects (652-680)
- Record Setters (681-687)
- League Leaders (688-697)
- Super Star Specials (698-707)
- Pro Visions (708-713)
In an effort to keep pace with card design advancements at the time, Fleer improved the quality of cards in its flagship set by using metallic inks on both sides of the card and a smoother card stock. The design also reflected the popular use of teal as a color at the time (e.g., San Jose Sharks, Florida Marlins, Charlotte Hornets, etc). As with that year's Donruss set, Fleer increased the price of a wax pack to $0.99.
1992 Fleer was notable for the jumbo pack-exclusive Rookie Sensations inserts, which were a key part of the "Insert Mania" craze that swept through the Hobby in the early-to-mid-1990's.
Separate from the 1992 base set was a 24-card promotional set called 1992 Fleer Citgo The Performer.

Promos
To promote the 1992 set, Fleer produced two Promo cards. The first featured Kirby Puckett and is one of the rarest Promo cards from the early 1990's. It was printed and distributed at the 1991 MLB All-Star Game FanFest event in Toronto as a sneak peak at the 1992 design. The photo used on the front is completely different than the one eventually used on Puckett's base 1992 Fleer card and the stats on the back ended at the 1990 season. It is believed that less that 100 copies of the Puckett Promo were printed.
The second Promo card featured Roger Clemens and then-Fleer CEO Paul Mullan on a Commemorative card that acted as a press release detailing information about the 1992 Fleer set. This information was on the back of the card and dated, "November 21, 1991".

Rookie Sensations
Rookie Sensations was a 20-card set that was exclusive to 35-card jumbo packs and featured the best young players in the game at the time. The cards were extremely popular upon release resulting in packs selling for levels far above suggested retail levels and was one of the sets that was attributed to kicking off the "Insert Mania" craze that drove the Hobby in the early-to-mid 1990's.
NOTE: Copies without a foil-stamped nameplate and logo exist. According to collectorempire.com, cards from this insert and others were stolen from the Fleer factory before the foil was applied and distributed on the secondary market.
