Description

2000 Skybox Metal (the "Universe" moniker was dropped due to the re-branding effort that started with the previous year's set) was a 250-card single-series set produced by Fleer/Skybox and released in March, 2000. Notably, this was the final year for the Metal brand in baseball as Fleer discontinued the Skybox brand name. In the basketball Hobby, the Metal brand reappeared in 2008 for a single release but more prominently in 2011 for a Fleer Retro release; in the football Hobby, the Metal brand reappeared in 2012 through its own Fleer Retro release. However, no such revival has occurred in baseball and the brand has been defunct ever since.

Each card in the set is printed on silver etched foil that created a textured look and feel and emanated from the player photo in the center. The last fifty cards in the base set made up a short-printed "Prospects" subset. As in previous years, all cards were highly susceptible to chipping along the edges and marked as "condition sensitive" by Beckett.

Alex Rodriguez returned as the frontman for this product has he continued to be the face of Fleer and was featured to promote their other brands that year (e.g., 2000 E-X, 2000 Fleer Ultra).
