The 2001 Donruss Elite set (the second baseball product issued by Donruss-Playoff) was released to The Hobby in May 2001.  The all foil-board base set consists of 200 cards with the last 50 cards making up a rookie subset.  Each rookie is serial-numbered to 1000 copies, with the first 100 part of the die-cut and autographed "Turn of the Century" parallel.  Each 24-pack waxbox yielded one serial-numbered rookie, one Extra Edition exchange card, one serial-numbered parallel, three serial-numbered inserts, and two autographed/game used cards.

The last 50 cards in the base set (cards 201-250) were issued as exchange coupons for unspecified rookies and prospects, and randomly seeded into packs at a rate of 1:14.  Unlike other similar exchange programs, each coupon cost $5.99 to redeem and initially the checklist was not to be revealed until after the November 1, 2001 expiration date.  This program was not well received by collectors, and forced Donruss-Playoff to announced in late October a provisional checklist and to extend the deadline to January 20th, 2002.
In April, 2002 representatives at Donruss-Playoff released the production figures for each of the Elite Extra Edition cards. All of these cards are actually serial-numbered "XXX/1000" on back but were mailed out in random order, meaning that, although Donruss-Playoff said that only 556 copies of Mark Prior's card were issued, some collectors received a Prior card with a serial-number above 556 -- all of which defeated the whole purpose of the serial-numbering.
In February 2002, Donruss-Playoff announced that all remaining cards were destroyed; however, in future D-P baseball releases a fair number of 2001 Elite Extra Edition "buybacks" were inserted.

The last 50 cards in the 2001 Donruss Elite base set (cards 201-250) were dubbed the "Extra Edition" and issued as exchange cards for unspecified rookies and prospects.  The odds of finding an Extra Edition redemption card was 1:14/packs.  Each exchange card had a number from 201-250 and cost $5.99 to redeem.  As part of the program, the final checklist would not be revealed until after the November 1st, 2001 expiration date.

This program was not well received by collectors, and forced Donruss-Playoff to announce in late October a provisional checklist and to extend the deadline to January 20th, 2002.  The checklist would be revised and the expiration date extended a second time.

In April, 2002 Elite Extra Edition began fulfillment with Donruss-Playoff releasing final production figures. All cards that D-P sent out were serial-numbered "XXX/1000" on the front but were mailed out in random order, meaning that, for example, although Donruss-Playoff said that only 556 of Mark Prior's DEEE card were redeemed, some collectors received a Prior card with a serial-number greater than 556 -- which defeated the whole purpose of the serial-numbering.

In February 2002, Donruss-Playoff announced that all remaining cards were destroyed; however in ensuing years, future D-P baseball releases would have a fair number of 2001 DEEE "buybacks."  In addition, a number of DEEE's without serial-numbers have emerged -- usually as "buyback" cards used as part of Donruss-Playoff's "Recollection Collection" program.  You can draw your own conclusions on that.

The first 100 serial-numbered copies of the 50-card rookie subset (cards 151-200), is paralleled with a die-cut and (for 48 of the 50 cards) an on-card autograph of the player.  Many players, including Albert Pujols, did not return their cards in time for inclusion in the product and therefore were available as redemptions (all of which expired May 1, 2003). Cards 195 and 198 (Ichiro and Tsuyoshi Shinjo, respectively) were issued without autographs, as both players were under an exclusive autograph contract to Upper Deck.

These certified autograph cards were made available as a compensation by Donruss-Playoff to collectors for autograph exchange cards that the manufacturer was unable to fulfill in the 2001 season. Each card is serial-numbered of 100 on front. Unlike most Donruss-Playoff autograph cards from 2001, the athletes signed the actual card rather than signing a sticker (of which was then affixed to the card at a later date). The cards first started to appear on the secondary market in April, 2002.

Randomly inserted in packs, this 24-card set is a full autographed parallel of the regular insert set printed on double-sided holo-foil board.  Whereas the base version has a yellow/gold color scheme, the autographs are red/pink.  Cards with single players were serial-numbered to 100 while those with dual players were numbered to 50. Like all autographs in this product, each card is embossed with a 2001 Donruss Elite stamp for authenticity.

The redemptions for cards #PT-23 and #PT-24 and some of card #PT-22 were accidentally labelled as part of the ''2001 Donruss Elite Football'' product.  In addition, redemptions for card 22 were available for both baseball and football.  "22 baseball" was fulfilled with the Nolan Ryan / Pedro Martinez card listed below; while "22 football" was redeemed with one of the Nolan Ryan /Roger Clemens cards.

Three different card #22s exist.  One is a Nolan Ryan / Pedro Martinez dual autograph that packed out as a baseball redemption (see above).  The other two #22s were "football" redemptions. One pictures Nolan Ryan on the front and Roger Clemens on the back, while on the other Clemens is up front and Ryan is on the reverse.  Both cards are serial-numbered to 50 copies; however it is unclear if this is the aggregate production for both Clemens/Ryan cards, or if 50 copies of both cards were produced.  The Ryan(front)/Clemens(back) is sequentially-numbered "22FB-l" while the Clemens(front)/Ryan(back) is numbered "22FB-n".

Roger Clemens was not featured in the non-autographed Passing the Torch insert set, and it's believed that Clemens was commissioned by Donruss-Playoff to fulfill these football redemptions.

The redemption cards for #PT-23 and #PT-24 were also mistakenly labelled as football cards; however, unlike with card #22, no "baseball" exchange coupons exist.  All 23 and 24 "football" exchange cards were fulfilled by cards #PT-23 and #PT-24, respectively.

Randomly inserted into packs, this 45-card set features past and present greats with swatches of game-worn jerseys displayed on the cards. Cards with single players are sequentially numbered to 100 while those with doubles are numbered to 50. Exchange cards with a redemption deadline of May 1st, 2003 were seeded into packs for Ernie Banks, Lou Brock, Pedro Martinez, Ozzie Smith and Frank Thomas. In addition, exchange cards packed out for the following dual-player cards: Brock/Ozzie, Banks/Sandberg, F.Robinson/Thomas and Clemens/Martinez.
This sixteen-card set is an autographed partial-parallel of the regular insert set. Almost every card in the set packed out as an exchange card with a redemption deadline of May 1st, 2003. Only Johnny Bench, Al Kaline and Harmon Killebrew signed cards in time to be seeded directly into packs.

Mark-Prior.jpg?id=9859a24a-bcae-4475-bac9-016fb28b17f0&size=original&side=front&.jpg Mark-Prior.jpg?id=9859a24a-bcae-4475-bac9-016fb28b17f0&size=original&side=back&.jpg

NOTES:

  • Because of the "pay-for-redemption" nature of these cards, all cards that would have otherwise been considered true rookie cards, have been designated as "XRCs" by Beckett.
  • Each card is serial-numbered to 1000. The production figures listed below are what Donruss-Playoff announced were distributed. However, as explained above, these should be taken with a grain of salt.

The first 100 serial-numbered copies of the 50-card rookie subset (cards 151-200) are die-cut and (for 48 of the 50 cards) autographed (on-card) by the player. Many players, including Albert Pujols, did not return their cards in time for inclusion in the product and therefore were available as redemptions (all of which expired May 1st, 2003). Cards 195 and 198 (Ichiro and Tsuyoshi Shinjo, respectively) were issued without autographs, as both players were under an exclusive autograph contract to Upper Deck.

Collectors attending the March 2002 Chicago Sun-Times Show who opened a sealed Hobby box of 2001 Donruss Elite Baseball at Donruss-Playoff's corporate booth, would receive a "Chicago Collection" card. Chicago Collection parallels the first 150 cards of the base set. Each is embossed with the show's logo and is serial-numbered to five.

These certified autograph cards were made available as a compensation by Donruss-Playoff to collectors for autograph exchange cards that the manufacturer was unable to fulfill in the 2001 season. Each card is serial-numbered to 100 copies, and are embossed with an "ELITE LEGACY" stamp.

Unlike most Donruss-Playoff autograph cards from 2001, the athletes signed the actual card rather than signing a sticker (of which was then affixed to the card at a later date). The cards first started to appear on the secondary market in April 2002.

This 24-card set is a full autographed parallel of the regular Passing the Torch set. Whereas the base version has a yellow/gold color scheme, the autographs are red/pink. Cards with single players are serial-numbered to 100 while those with dual players were numbered to 50. Like all autographs in this product, each card is embossed with a 2001 Donruss Elite stamp for authenticity.

Nearly all of these cards were not available in time for insertion and packed out as exchange cards which expired May 1st, 2003. Wade Boggs, Todd Helton, Stan Musial and Nolan Ryan were the only players to return their cards in time.

The redemptions for cards #PT-23 and #PT-24 and some of card #PT-22 were accidentally labelled as part of the 2001 Donruss Elite Football product. In addition, redemptions for card #PT-22 were available for both baseball and football. "#PT-22 baseball" was fulfilled with the Nolan Ryan/Pedro Martinez card listed below; while "#PT-22 football" was redeemed with one of the Nolan Ryan/Roger Clemens cards.

Football Exchange

Like most Passing the Torch Autographs, these four cards packed out as redemptions; however, the exchange cards were erroneously labelled as coming from the 2001 Donruss Elite Football set. The four cards listed below were produced to fulfill these "football" redemptions.

Three different card #PT-22s exist. One is a Nolan Ryan/Pedro Martinez dual autograph that packed out as a baseball redemption (see above). The other two #PT-22s were "football" redemptions.

The redemption cards for #PT-23 and #PT-24 were also mistakenly labelled as football cards; however, unlike with card #PT-22, no "baseball" exchange coupons exist. All PT-23 and PT-24 "football" exchange cards were fulfilled by cards #PT-23 and #PT-24, respectively.

This fifteen-card set is an autographed partial-parallel of the regular insert set. Exchange cards with a May 1st, 2003 redemption deadline were seeded into packs for almost the entire set. Only Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew and Stan Musial managed to return their cards in time for packout. As with the Passing the Torch Autographs, redemption cards #TT21 and #TT22 are mistakenly listed as coming from the 2001 Donruss Elite Football set. The quantity for Ernie Banks signed cards was never revealed by the manufacturer.
