In 1994, Hank Aaron autographed 1954 Gold parallel reprints of his [[1954 Topps]] card for insertion into [[1994 Topps Archives|that year's Topps Archives]] set.  As a late addition to the product, Topps bought back 25 copies of that card and randomly inserted them into packs of 2012 Archives.  To differentiate these buybacks from the original 1994 cards, each buyback is serial-numbered to 25 on the front (the 1994 cards were NOT serial-numbered).

On the 1994 cards, the text and Milwaukee Braves logo were gold foil stamped.  To distinguish the 2012 buybacks from the 1994 cards, each card has a special "ARCHIVES FAN FAVORITES" and serial-number foil-stamped on the front.

These autographs, featuring two of the stars of the 1984 film ''The Karate Kid'', are exclusive to Hobby.  Each card measures 5" X 7" and packed out as a box topper.  What this has to do with baseball is anybody's guess.

Description

2012 Topps Archives, a 241-card set, was released to retail May 17th and to the hobby on May 23rd, 2012. Due to restrictions on the number of retired players that can appear in a specific product alongside current MLB players, 2012 Archives can not be structured like the Archives sets of the 1990s and 2000s -- i.e. a set full of reprints. Instead, the set will feature current stars in a variety of classic designs along with a subset based on the All-Time Fan Favorites set of the 2000s.

Each 24-pack Hobby box is expected to yield two All-Time Fan Favorites autographs.

A number of late additions to the product were announced by Topps in the run-up to Archives' release. However, most were never released.

Distribution

Hobby: 24 packs per box, eight cards per pack (MSRP: $5). 10 boxes per case.

Blasters: (MSRP $19.99) contain 8 packs with 8 cards in each pack.

Rack packs: (MSRP $4.99) contain 14 cards.

Retail: (MSRP $3.09) contain 8 cards.

Like the All-Time Fan Favorites set of the mid-00s, this subset features retired players done in the style, but are NOT reprints, of classic Topps cards. The ATFF subset is short-printed and seeded into packs at the rate of 1:4.

Card #241 was printed in much more limited quantities than the other 40 cards in the subset.

Each Autographed Original features an on-card autograph on a previously released Topps card. Each card is serial-numbered to five copies, and exclusive to Hobby packs.

As a late addition to the product, Topps announced that Frank Robinson would sign an additional 88 non-serial-numbered copies of his 1991 Topps card. Unfortunately, as with the Six-Player Book Autographs and 80s Icon Cut Signatures (see below), none of the 1991 Frank Robinson autographs have emerged from this product.

  • Willie Mays
  • Hank Aaron
  • Sandy Koufax
  • Dennis Eckersley EXCH

1994 Topps Archives Hank Aaron Gold Autograph Buyback

In 1994, Hank Aaron autographed 1954 Gold parallel reprints of his 1954 Topps card for insertion into that year's Topps Archives set.

Touched By Greatness

The Touched by Greatness card features Cal Ripken, Jr.'s hand-print and autograph on an over-sized card. The cards, which are redemptions and hand-numbered to 100 copies, are exclusive to Hobby and packed as a box-topper.

In a video posted by Ripken's own Ironclad Authentics, Ripken is seen making the hand-prints while wearing a batting glove -- which defeats the whole purpose of a "hand print."

Just like the other late additions to Archives (e.g. The Frank Robinson buyback autographs, the six-player book card, et al), it does not appear that the Ripken hand print cards were ever released.

Six-Player Book Autographs

Yet another late edition to Archives, redemption cards good for one of ten one-of-one Six-Player Book Autographs were (allegedly) inserted into packs. Other than a mock-up of a Darryl Strawberry / Rickey Henderson / Dale Murphy / Andre Dawson / Dave Winfield / Tony Gwynn card, none of these cards are known to have ever emerged. It can be assumed that they were never made.

Karate Kid Autographs

These autographs, featuring two of the stars of the 1984 film The Karate Kid, are exclusive to Hobby. Each card measures 5" X 7" and packed out as a box topper. What this has to do with baseball is anybody's guess.

Unlike the other late additions to the product that were announced, these cards were actually produced and distributed in Archives boxes.

80s Icon Cut Signatures

Just like with the Six-Player Book Autographs and the Frank Robinson buyback autograph, the 80s Icon Cut Signatures were also a late addition to Archives, and they too appear to have never been made. The three celebrities listed below were announced provisionally by Topps, but have yet to emerge. They too, more than likely, were never made.

James Earl Jones

Vanna White

Bob Barker
