A Rookie's Guide to Buying Wax
Breaking back into the hobby after a couple of decades away can be daunting. I've compiled a few nuggets of information that I believe I would have found helpful when I first started getting back into the swing of things. Edits or expansions are more than welcome.

Where to buy wax boxes
Your local card shop is always a great place to start (be sure to check out the Card Shop Locator to find shops in your area), but there are also many large online retailers specializing in sealed wax boxes. The two biggest, by reputation, are:
* Dave & Adam's Card World, in Tonawanda, NY. Dave and Adam's has an incredibly deep inventory of sealed wax boxes and cases, including a far deeper selection of retail boxes than any other dealer I've come across.
* Blowout Cards, in Chantilly, VA. Blowout has an enormous hobby inventory (though a relatively small retail inventory), and they very often have the best prices in the business.
Other online retailers of note include:
* Atlanta Sports Cards
* DCS Sports Cards
* Big T Sports Cards
* Pittsburgh Sports
* South Bay Baseball Cards

What kind of boxes to buy
The number of cards per box can vary widely among the types below, as can the insert card ratios, so be sure to review your options carefully before making a purchase. There are seven major varieties of wax box:
* Retail box. Destined for stores like Wal-Mart or Target. Insert ratios fairly low.
* Blaster box. Small, low-priced boxes generally containing 8-10 retail packs (though the exact number can vary by manufacturer).
* Rack box. A box of long, thin packs, usually containing two or three compartments of cards. Generally meant to be sold in retail stores. Insertion ratios similar or identical to retail packs.
* Hobby box. Generally more expensive than retail packs, but the insertion ratios are much better, and the boxes will often contain more cards (for instance, a retail box of 2012 Topps Series 1 contains 24 packs of 12 cards, for a total of 288 cards; a hobby box of 2012 Topps Series 1 contains 36 packs of 10 cards, for a total of 360 cards, but can cost as much as 50% more).
* Value box. A Topps-specific product, often sold in both retail stores and hobby shops, generally containing:
:* 5 hobby packs of a basic Topps product, such as 2011 Topps Update;
:* 1 pack of a high-end Topps product, such as 2011 Bowman Chrome; and
:* a Value-Box-exclusive card of some sort.
* Jumbo box. Jumbo packs, which are sometimes also called 'fat packs,' contain three to four times the number of cards in a retail pack, and generally feature very favorable insert ratios. As well, many manufacturers issue insert sets or parallels that are "jumbo exclusive."
* HTA box. "Home Team Advantage," a promotional program created by Topps, shipped exclusively to hobby stores; HTA packs are often indistinguishable from jumbo packs, and generally have insert ratios similar or identical thereto.

Secondary markets
The two largest:
* eBay. Buying sealed wax on eBay can be tricky. There are deals to be had, but be patient, and make sure you're completely comfortable with the seller. Remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. A really cheap box at Blowout might be your lucky day; a really cheap box on eBay might be a scam.
* CheckOutMyCards.com. A consignment seller of single cards; often referred to as COMC. They do not sell wax, but their existence is worth being aware of. (Both eBay and COMC can be useful for flipping hits in order to get money to buy more wax!)
In addition to these, Beckett has a fairly active marketplace, and several forums (notably Blowout) offer an active base of users for buying, selling, or trading cards.

Supplies
Smaller supplies (penny sleeves, top-loaders, team bags) can often be purchased most economically from your local card shop, or at the websites listed above. Larger, more unwieldy supplies, on the other hand (cardboard storage boxes, sorting trays, and other items that are difficult to ship), can be prohibitively expensive to buy online in small quantities, and are therefore generally best purchased at a local card shop or in quantity from a large supplies-focused retailer like BCW. This is one of those shops that seems to have survived because the strip mall it's in isn't the best, but it is in a pretty good location, near a McDonald's and a Chuck E. Cheese's, so the kid magnet factor helps add a little gravity to the shop. It's a little sad walking in, as at least a third of the shelf space is just empty, and another 10% of it is placeholder inventory that nobody ever buys (celebrity photos, player plaques, junk boxes of various Pro Set, etc.). There's a moderate amount of M:TG and kid gaming cards, but limited to one display case, and the rest of the shop is sports related.

This shop is a case of how current wax can keep a store in business. Their older wax is varied, and their loose cards are a good deal, especially for local sports teams. The owner is also likely to boost you some freebies out of inventory, especially if you're a new customer. The shop is friendly bases its prices in reality, with the exception of a little premium on high-end new wax.
Simply put, this shop is a sports card collector's dream. I used to work within walking distance from it, and would hit it at lunchtime about once a month.

There isn't a single Magic card, Yu-gi-oh pack, comic book, beanie baby, or hot wheel to be found. Just wall-to-wall four major sports cards, autos, and memorabilia. Baseball cards, including HOFers, dating back to the 19th century, as well as early 20th century oddball stuff, are highlights for me every time I go.

The owners are exactly what you'd hope for; tough graders that also price everything at normal exchange value. Anything vintage that's a bit off-grade (EX or less) is regularly 10% off, and once you hit the register, they're likely to round down the price for you a little further.

On my last visit, they even gave me a little break on some very hot current wax. I am a repeat customer, but these guys will be fair and a little generous; they'll want to increase the chances of repeat business.

Interestingly, this shop is one of a network of three that runs up the Peninsula. The Belmont shop is also good, and does have a smattering of kid gaming cards, but the store is 80% sports, and they have a huge assortment of older wax boxes that are often at fierce discounts.

If you're a sports fan and card collector that happens to be taking a trip to the Bay Area to see a game, you have to add Stevens Creek Sports Cards to your sightseeing list. It's practically a card museum with affordable price tags and top-notch curators.
Temdee has been in the collectible business since 1976, and has been at the current location since 1991. The building is approx. 6000 sq. ft and is situated on the Black Horse Pike (NJ Route 42) in Turnersville, New Jersey. Business hours are: Mon-Fri noon to 8:00PM, Sat. 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday noon to 5:00 PM.

Temdee first opened in 1976 as a stamp and coin shop in Runnemede, New Jersey. In 1979 Temdee started to buy and sell baseball cards as well as other sports cards and non sports cards, and sports collectibles. These included yearbooks and programs, bobble dolls, autographed items, etc. In 1981, comic books were added to our existing store. As Temdee continued to grow, they finally moved into their current home in 1991. It had been a small strip center with one large store and two small stores. They bought the entire center and made the two smaller stores a warehouse and used the large store for retail. Since then, Temdee has added collectible toys including Star Wars and Starting Line-Ups.
They have a huge selection of singles, all ranging from 25 cents and up. They also have a relic/auto bin separated by sport which is $5 each or 4 for $20. TONNNNS of packs, TONS of cases, and also some memorabilia. A little pricey but the selection is amazing! Also they trade with buyers. Rich, the owner, is very friendly. Much cheaper than All Pro, but the selection for everything is a lot smaller, as is the shop in general. 10 cent cardboard cases of cards, which is cool, though many of those cards are of the "we busted such and such expensive product for the hits, here are the base cards" variety. A few $1, $2, $5 bins, but nothing much in them (not even relics or autos), and no real hits to be found as singles. Decent amount of cases and packs at lower prices than All Pro, but again, selection isn't as nice. They do stay current though and have the latest stuff, and the owner was nice.
The owner is also really cool - as I browsed around he pulled stuff from boxes behind the counter that he thought I might like. I didn't buy any of them, as it was nothing I was really crazy about. But it was a nice touch as they were some nice cards - way to go above and beyond in assisting the customer! He has one of the largest selections of packs I've ever seen at a shop. He must have over 50 different baseball packs for sale. The cost of new packs and boxes are fair, but his prices on old wax boxes are high. Occasionally he has 10-15% off sales on all his boxes.
Currently, the shop is open under a new owner and they have many singles, in random boxes which aren't organized. They don't sell high-end wax, just your Topps 1 & 2, Heritage, some UD. They also have sets and 90s wax boxes for sale.

It's mostly newer, and mostly hits, but there's a 2000 count box of cards for a quarter, some hit boxes, and some hits under glass. The owner is also really cool - as I browsed around he pulled stuff from boxes behind the counter that he thought I might like. I didn't buy any of them, as it was nothing I was really crazy about. But it was a nice touch as they were some nice cards - way to go above and beyond in assisting the customer! He also offered me half off on the hits which was cool. Totally worth a visit.</map>
