2010 Topps Allen & Ginter World Champions

Description

The 2010 edition of Topps Allen & Ginter's World Champions was released the week of June 30, 2010. New inserts include: Gods and Monsters, Scribes and Seafarers and Cabinet cards featuring full-size, complete relic swatches.

The 350-card base set consists of 260 veterans, 30 rookies (RC), 25 public figures (PF), and 35 World Champions (WC).

The Ginter Code also returns for the 3rd year, with a card (#165) of the person who cracked the code from 2009, Nick Jacoby.

Each Allen & Ginter 24-Count Hobby Box contains a combination of any three of the following cards: Autograph, Cut Signature, Rip, Relic, Printing Plate. Each Hobby box will also include either an N-43 or Cabinet Box Loader.

Curiously, there are no base cards (or corresponding mini-parallels) of Derek Jeter or David Ortiz.

Late Adddition of Stephen Strasburg

On June 7th, 2010, the day before what would be his Major League debut, Topps announced on their corporate blog that, "(Stephen) Strasburg rookie cards will appear in the remainder of Topps 2010 baseball products starting with the release of Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball." <ref>http://www.toppsblog.com/?p=461</ref> Similar to the Kosuke Fukudome card in 2008 TA&G, Topps added Strasburg as a late addition to the product, but not as a standard-sized card. Instead, a card of Strasburg numbered 401 is available only in the mini-sized format. Even though the mini card has a RC logo, Topps did not produce a corresponding base card of Strasburg; therefore, this mini card is not a "true" rookie card. In addition to the mini, a redemption good for an autographed Strasburg is also available.

Responding to reports that some dealers who ripped multiple cases of 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter failed to receive a single Strasburg mini; on July 1st, Topps issued a press release insisting that the Strasburg is not short-printed. “Stephen Strasburg’s Allen & Ginter base mini card (No. 401) falls at the same rate as any one base mini card in the product,” read a company statement. “The difference between Strasburg and the other subjects in the base mini set is that Strasburg’s card does not have any parallels (Allen & Ginter Back, Black Bordered, No Number, Bazooka Back, Silk, Wood and Printing Plate).” <ref>http://blogbeckett.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/topps-says-strasburg-allen-ginter-mini-is-not-short-print-after-all/</ref>

With a typical 24-pack Hobby box yielding anywhere from seven to ten regular minis, and the statement from Topps that all minis (including the Strasburg) were produced in equal quantities, it is believed that the odds of finding the Strasburg mini are anywhere from 1:40 to 1:50 Hobby boxes.

Hobby: 24 packs plus one N-43 or Cabinet card per box; eight cards (one mini and one This Day in History insert) per pack.

Promos

Included with 2010 Allen & Ginter sell-sheets, was a card featuring a swatch from a limited edition Tommy Bahama shirt commemorating the 2009 World Series. Only 900 of the Tommy Bahama shirts were produced and each promo card is serial-numbered to 1900 copies. It is unclear how many of the shirts were sacrificed to produce these cards.
