Description

The inaugural Fleer Genuine set was released in May 2001. The base set consists of 130 cards, the last 30 making up the rookie and prospect-laden and serial-numbered "Genuine Upside" subset.

Genuine was designed to compete with similar $5/pack products like SP Authentic, and the parallels between SPA and Genuine are striking -- not the least of which is the product's name. Each 24-pack Hobby box of Genuine should yield one card from each of three insert sets, two Genuine Upside cards, and three of "hits." Also randomly inserted into packs were 500 redemption cards good for an uncut sheet autographed by Derek Jeter.

Like most 2001 sets, the Genuine Upside subset is full of prospects who never panned out and marginal Major Leaguers. Although Genuine does include an Ichiro RC, Albert Pujols was not included.

Distribution

Hobby: 24 packs per box, 5 cards per pack (MSRP $4.99).

Autographs & Game-Used

Final Cut

NOTE: Some Final Cut cards were issued with patch swatches, as opposed to regular jersey fabric. Do NOT assume they are fake. Despite the fact that card is labeled as a regular jersey card, some Final Cut cards (like Edgar Martinez's) with patch material were produced.

These cards are also not sequentially-numbered.

  • Wade Boggs
  • Barry Bonds SP 330
  • George Brett
  • Sean Casey
  • J.D. Drew SP 75
  • Bob Gibson SP 200

  • Robin Yount

Final Cut Redemption Replacements

These six cards (all New York Yankees) were produced by Fleer in 2001, but were withdrawn prior to packout for licensing purposes. Some of the Guidry, Larsen, Randolph and Righetti cards did make their way into packs as Fleer attempted to pull all of the copies they could find from production prior to shipping.

After Fleer's 2005 bankruptcy and liquidation, these six unreleased Final Cut cards were issued as replacements for unexpired redemption cards.

  • Ron Guidry
  • Reggie Jackson
  • Don Larsen
  • Willie Randolph
  • Dave Righetti
  • Thurman Munson

Coverage Plus

Each Coverage Plus card is serial-numbered to 150 copies.

  • Barry Bonds
  • Darin Erstad
  • Troy Glaus
  • Tony Gwynn
  • Derek Jeter
  • Randy Johnson
  • Andruw Jones
  • Chipper Jones
  • Cal Ripken, Jr.
  • Frank Thomas

Material Issue

Material Issue #11MI Greg Maddux

NOTE: Some Material Issue cards were issued with patch swatches, as opposed to regular jersey fabric. Do NOT assume they are fake. Despite the fact that card is labeled as a regular jersey card, some Material Issue cards with patch material were produced.

The Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling cards were short-printed. Although they are not serial-numbered, Fleer did reveal the production figures for these two cards.

The Mike Mussina card was withdrawn prior to packout for licensing purposes. The Mussina card was eventually released as a "buyback" in the 2005 Fleer National Pastime product. The Mussina found in '05 National Pastime packs was hand-numbered to 27 copies.

  • Steve Carlton SP
  • J.D. Drew
  • Darin Erstad

  • Rod Carew
  • Tommy John
  • Elston Howard
  • Billy Martin

NOTEs:

  • Black and blue autograph variations are known to exist.
  • Un-signed copies are on the market also. These were not issued in Fleer Genuine packs, but appeared in FairField/Target re-packs.
  • The Phil Rizzuto autograph surfaced after Fleer's bankruptcy. None of Rizzuto's cards were hand numbered.
  • Willie Mays did not sign any of his cards and none were inserted into packs. It is believed that Mays kept the cards and gave them to friends and family. One was auctioned by Bobert Edward auctions as part of the Sy Berger Collection. None of the Mays cards were serial-numbered, but it is believed that 102 exist.
